I brought my son William to BHC when he was ten, after Tony Collier suggested he liked it at School. 

Prior to that I’d not played since I was in my late teens, which sadly was a long time ago! 

I joined in a few times and started playing in the clubs summer friendlies on a Friday evening. 

Bit by bit I became more involved, playing in the 5s and then the 4s. Helping with the age group team at training, helping with the pitch and finally taking on the role as Chair! 

Burton has seen all three of my sons play and enjoy a sport I love. There is a real sense of history and community in the club and I’m glad to be part of that.

I started playing Hockey in 2002, when the Ladies 2's were formed. I have been involved with the club all of my life (I blame my Dad!)- and have fond memories of watching hockey at Shobnall, playing on the park and then going to Henhust Club for a Panda Pop and bag of crisps. I started on the left wing, but now play anywhere across the back line, and have even been known to stand in as keeper! 
I'm also a level 1 Umpire and Coach. I have many highlights but probably a standout is seeing my daughter have a go at hockey on the Ellis for the first time.

I started playing hockey at primary school and joined the club when I was about 11. I mainly play in midfield but will play anywhere if needed. Highlights for me were the return to hockey from COVID, helping Toby run the 4th Team, (which at that time featured Ian Brown and the Kemps)! Captaining the 2nd team in a season where we finished 3rd from top, and a claim to fame was playing the first game in the newly formed Men's 7th Team.

Taking after my dad, at the age of 8 I started playing hockey for Lichfield HC, after playing winger/forward for club, county (Staffs) & region (Midlands) at the ripe of age of 16, injury forced early retirement, skip forward to 2018 and 15 years later welcome to Burton HC, starting in the 4th team and playing for each ladies teams over the seasons and flicking over a number of committee roles, I am currently the oldest in  our ladies 1st team line up …. As well as fixtures Secretary and Communications Secretary.

I currently play as a Keeper, I started playing in goals at primary school, and started at the club whilst in high school joining the academy, and would go on to be keeper for the first Badgers side at the club. I have since fulfilled a number of roles including- Men's 5th team captain, and Fixtures Secretary for both Men and Women for a number of years.

I played my first game for Burton in September 1979 on redgra at Repton. I have been Secretary, Chairman, Captains for the Men’s 3rd to the 6ths and started the Vets Team in 1996. I was playing regularly until 2016 when I started coaching cross country athletics and this clashed with match times. I have though managed to play at least one game most years since then. Playing in the lower teams I played in matches where Rocky, Jon Orme and many others made their club debuts. A chance conversation I had with Wille Welch led to the discussion which set in motion the separation of Burton Hockey Club from the Burton Cricket Club.  So we could embrace playing on Astros and move away from grass pitches and helping to develop club training.

Mr A. J. D. Simey (Convenor and Chairman) was elected 1st Team Captain. Entrance fee was fixed at 2/6 with an annual subscription of 7/6. T. S. Green (Hon. Secretary) was requested to write to the Hockey Association for “particulars” and a copy of the Rules. It was also resolved that notices should be sent to all Ladies and Gentlemen who had played in the previous season informing them that a club had been formed and inviting their membership.

The aim was to establish a first and second eleven. The first fixture list was provided for Gentlemen’s Matches. Ladies’ Matches and Mixed Matches. Both Nottingham and Leicester H.C. were amongst the initial fixtures and this link has been maintained for 75 years.

 19th Century Beginnings

When hockey matches could not be played owing to ground conditions being unfit elsewhere, the Burton ground has the reputation of being extremely well-constructed and most efficiently drained. Credit, initially, goes to Frank Evershed who supervised the construction and, one understands, met the cost. At the same time one must commend the Committees of the Cricket Club and the Hockey Club, together with the later groundsmen, including Harry Fletcher and his son, Jim, for their foresight and ability. The Hockey Club paid rental to the Cricket Club – the amount often becoming a matter of disputation.

Affiliation to the Midland Counties Association was obtained in 1902. This was a much more significant step for the Club than it seemed at the time. It opened the way for any Burton player of that time and in subsequent years to be considered for both County and Divisional honours. As records show, Burton has a proud record in both respects.

Midland County Hockey

The 1914 Committee members were called together again on the 26th June, 1919, and decided to hold a Special General Meeting of the Club on the 7th July. At that meeting the President, F. Evershed, paid tribute to those members who had died as a result of War Service. The names of T. Newton, R Penketh, Herbert Plant and F. W. Wragg were read.

During 1919, the Winshill Hockey Club declined an invitation to amalgamate with the Burton H. C.

Out break of World War I

Even by 1935, however, mechanisation was not yet complete. An item for 12/6 in the accounts – “Repairs to Horse’s Shoes – explains this. But, in that same year first mention of raising a 3rd Xl was made and the possibility of playing Sunday matches was mentioned by the President.

Travel arrangements and Formation of a 3rd Men's Team 

The Club’s Jubilee was celebrated by a dinner held at the Queen’s Hotel on the 11th March 1950. F. A. Lowe (Hon Sec 1903-05, Hon Treasurer 1903-06) presided in the absence of F. Evershed who was ill at the time. R. A. Burrows (Hon Sec D.C.H.A.) proposed the toast to the Club. B.W. Thomas (Capt 1950-52) replied. “The Visitors” was proposed by H. Gibson Lees (Hon Treasurer 1909-20 and Henry Smith (President of Derbyshire C.H.A.) replied. T. Stanley Green (founder member 1899) proposed a toast to the President of the Burton Hockey Club (F. Evershed) and tribute to Frank Evershed and his work and influence was mentioned in all the speeches.

Post World War II

By 1957, at least 6 Burton members were playing in Derbyshire County teams at various levels, and Alan Wright organised arrangements for the visit of the “Brewsters” to Lowestoft. New members included N. Wilford, A. P. Turner, N King. H. H. Cherry kindly provided new goal posts for the Club.

 Social Events

Throughout the year we have the club organises social events, including comedy nights, club days, tour teams culminating in the end of season dinner. Teams also organise their own social events including days and nights out.

Training Sessions

For 2025 we have a new rigorous training schedule, this consists of Women's, Men's, Goalie and Academy Training. Take a Look at the calendar below, choose a suitable session and come on down  to the Ellis pitch at Shobnall.

We host games at weekends usually Saturday and have training sessions for both Ladies and Mens sides plus the Academy during the week.

Burton Hockey Club (EH id: 1180) has also been recognised as working towards providing a Safe, Effective and Child Friendly club environment, and as such has been awarded the England Hockey ClubsFirst Accreditation.
