The Ellis Astro Story

Prior to 2014 Burton Hockey Club had grown to a club with 4 Women's Sides and 7 Men's Sides, along with a veterans, badgers and multiple junior teams teams. This meant the club had to play at multiple pitches including Shobnall (Shared with Barton), Uttoxeter and Mackworth.

There became an ever growing need to have our own pitch. During 2014, Funds were raised to the tune of £68,958, this came from The Sportsman's Dinner held at St Georges Park with Jim Greaves raising £10,500. A Race Night, Raffle/ Charity Auction, Leciester Tigers Event all helped the cause. We were also supported by our sponsors and Members of the Club could fill and Astro Turf Piggy Bank, or buy a piece of the Astro (Astro 100 Club).

A successful bid to the National Hockey Foundation secured £50,000 towards our project from them. We also made an application for ESBC funding, under what is known as Section 106 agreements, which is essentially monies secured from Developers from their housing/construction projects in Burton and District.

Throughout 2014 further fundraising came in the form of-

Peter Ellis Legacy: £10K

In kind contributions for professional fees: £6000

Sportsman’s Dinner (Chilcott): £8,256

The Club gained Council agreement for leasing the land currently occupied by the old Redgra pitch at Shobnall Leisure Complex some time ago and so this will be the site of the new “Ellis Astro”.

The introduction of a new pitch also required the need for additional Changing facilities at Shobnall and so, working with ESBC, £370K has been secured from Staffordshire County Council toward these facilities. Our plan is that all this work be timed to happen in parallel with each other and so have the new changing facilities within the Sports Complex and our own Astro built and ready for the start of next season (2015). By combining these two activities as one project it became more attractive to Sport England for their funding eligibility criteria and as such has enabled us to win this incredible support of £320K of funds from them towards the combined project

The Club had now raised £525,000

The project now costing in excess of one million pounds was underway and scheduled to be complete by November 2015.

The club moved onto its new pitch in 2016, this was thanks to the hard work of volunteers raising funds and your funds and support making it happen.
