Final Score: 0 – 4It was a tough morning for the Ladies 2s as we faced a strong Erewash 1s side, coming away with a 4-0 loss despite lots of hard work and determination from everyone on the pitch.From the start, Erewash put the pressure on with quick passing and movement, forcing the back line to work tirelessly to block shots and clear any danger. Unfortunately, Erewash were able to breakthrough and take the lead in the first half. Score 0-1.

Despite the scoreline, the 2s showed real resilience. The midfield put in some serious shifts tracking back, and there were promising moments on the attack with lovely link-ups down the wings especially with Abi and Lyanna plus a couple of well executed penalty corners. But we were unable to score. As the game went on, Erewash’s continued to keep putting the pressure on, adding a couple more goals to the scoresheet. Still, the 2s never dropped their heads and continued to battle until the final whistle, with some brilliant saves from Tilly keeping the scoreline respectable. 

Final whistle 0-4.While it wasn’t the result we wanted, there were plenty of positives to take: solid teamwork, communication, and attacking plays that will definitely pay off in the next fixtures. Onwards and upwards!

Ladies 2s vs Erewash 1s Match Report

Away today against Lichfield, Burton went in with high hopes of coming away with a win,

With some changed up positions across the pitch the whole team did well to move into some different positions thinking this would be the game to try some different positions out,

From the off Burton were the more dominant side, Megan Bignell in goal saw a handful of saves through the first half but our defenders were pushing high with the majority of attacking play with Burton

Burton were overall the quicker and more skillful side and were able to play around the Lichfield players with quick passes up the pitch, we went into half time having had a good amount of chances on goal from varying players including Alex Harrison who decided to stretch her legs up most of the pitch - but we managed to take the lead 1-0 up with Rachel Brown slotting one through the keepers legs,

Come the 2nd half, we were thankful to have a sub with us this week, which meant with a bit of rotation the ladies were able to push for the full game time, the half was much the same with about 80% of possession being in Burtons attacking hands, we tried a number of different short corner routines but were unable to convert,

But with goals coming from Elizabeth Snelling from pretty much off the base line, Lisa Davies with a dummy around the keeper, Maddy Higgins over the head of the keeper and Rachel Brown with a rebound from the P Spot we finished the game on a 5-0 high, with nearly every player (Sorry Meg) making it into our attacking half at some point to push the waves of attack,

We thank our 7 supporters on the sidelines coming with us which was more than the home team had, we hear your voices and cheers from on the pitch, and to quote a parent 😉 “I’ve never clapped so much” ❤️💚

Ladies 1 V Lichfield 4 Match report

At home this week the men’s 3s lined up to face Belper 3s.Burton started very brightly, moving the ball well with some great interplay between Ed, George, Jacob, Jack, Rav and Tom. Belper slowly got back into the game and it became a very even contest. ￼Fortuitously for Belper a Burton clearance went awry and poor defending allowed them to score an unchallenged flick. This knocked some wind out of the Burton sails and did the opposite for Belper. Despite some good defending from Lee, Andy and Azhar and excellent decision making from Zack, Burton shipped two more goals before halftime, which was quite flattering for Belper.

Burton. grew stronger in the second half with Brody really coming into the game as well as Jamie and Henry. Burton strung some great moves together with George Bolus pivotal to all Burton‘s attacks. ￼Again disappointingly we shipped a soft goal, that put us on the back foot. Almost immediately, Zack made a great clearance only to be harshly blown for taking out an opponent. The resultant flick was dispatched and Burton were five down. Unfortunately, for Zack he was in the same position a few minutes later and again cleared the ball but was judged to have fouled the player in the process. To everyone’s amazement, he was then issued a card and sent from the field and Burton had to face a second flick with no keeper. The first effort this time was saved, but because it wasn’t saved with a stick the Belper player was given a second go that he put away. For the next 15 minutes, Burton played some of their best Hockey in the game however we picked up two more harsh cards and played most of the match out with 10 players. Great work from George opened up the Belper defence and he slipped the ball to Brody who scored his first goal for the Men’s.

Similar to last week, while the scoreline indicates a one sided game, Burton were well in this game from start to finish and actually were the better team during phases. We will need to continue to develop and work harder off￼ the ball to link better between defence and attack and react quicker to deflections in the D.

Man of the match was close between George Zach and Brody and the goal scorer took it deservedly for an excellent second-half performance.

Mens 3s v Belper 3s Match Report

This week the Ladies 2 travelled the (very welcome!) short distance to Abbotsholme School to play Leek. Burton started off brightly - with Nat, Lexy and Bex bolstering numbers. Leek’s two goals came in the first half - one as a result of a short corner. The umpire said he had warned us 3 times of not being 5m in our 23, but having not heard any we were treated to a short corner to defend. It was a well-worked short resulting in a goal for Leek. I can’t remember which way round the goals were but the other was from open play. The second half Burton battled hard - after a team talk focussing on possession, using space and movement. We had two short corners of our own, but unfortunately couldn’t convert. A couple of other chances came our way - one with Lyanna 1-1 with the keeper, and another lovely cross by Lyanna that went past the back post. Our movement forward improved during the second half - Steph, Abi (who played well as her first time as an Inner), and forwards of Nat, Lyanna and Sophie gave us great chances. We defended well throughout the second half - Naoise, myself, Bex and Lexi with support from Tilly and Felicity put some great solid tackles in and lovely forward balls. We kept out their final short corner with 2mins to go, final score 2-0.

Ladies 2s V Leek 3 Match Report

Having played Leek plenty of times before across the ladies section we knew what this week would bring, struggling again with the bare 11 and some less than fully healthy players, armed with Amy Palmer on the side line, we limbered up and into battle. Leek were as expected, a fairly physical side bringing some old school argy, bargy &amp; some young sets of skill. Burton throughout the game were the calmer of the two sides keeping level headed and focusing on the game at hand, with some attacking and defending from both teams and game play across the entire pitch, Burton saw most of the short corners in the first half, one of which saw Isla O'Farrell land one in the&nbsp;net from the right hand post and through the keepers legs on her 18th Birthday, Micky Shaw conveted&nbsp;from a right slip ball into the backboard, between these two goals, Leek converted a short corner of their own. 

Half time 2-1,Come the 2nd half, Burton had to get smart and save their leg energy against Leeks 13 players, some players taking that a little bit further than others and enjoying a nice 2min rest on the side with both Micky Shaw &amp; Lexie Elliott getting the same time resulting in 9 players on the pitch, the team soon dropped into positions needed though to fill gaps and hold Leek at bay with their overload of numbers. Burton still saw plenty of attacking play in the 2nd half with a some attempts on goal, however it was Leek that saw most of the short corners in the 2nd half and with Megan Bignell making some great saves, after she stick saved an airborne ball from the right a leek player volleyed the save into the net from the far post, burton had one last attacking push but with the whilst blown, final score was 2-2. 

A top effort all around from the ladies for a solid 70mins.

Ladies 1 v Leek 2 Match Report

The men’s 2s made the short trip across Shobnall to face Barton 2s away for a local derby. Expecting another tough game, the hosts immediately put Burton on the back foot, winning a short corner. This was defended and the game evened out for a few minutes. The home side broke the deadlock with a counter attack that ended with a Barton forward smashing the ball into the top corner. Despite this, Burton still managed to create chances and won several short corners, forcing good saves from the Barton keeper on two occasions. The hosts went down to 10 players for five minutes after one of their players was given a yellow card for bad language. Later in the first half, Barton got on top again and were able to convert two more goals from open play, leaving the score 3-0 at half time

Burton changed from a 4-4-2 to a 4-3-3 at the break, deciding things had not been working well enough in midfield. Andy Lockers was pushed forward to have more influence in the game. This had a positive effect and after defending a Barton short corner, Burton counter attacked. Steve Goodfellow won the short corner and converted the rebound after the away side’s initial effort was blocked. Goodfellow set up a second minutes later, as Ed Frost finished well at the back post. Barton were given a green card for not being five yards, but the visitors failed to capitalise on this advantage and Barton eventually slapped a fourth in from a short corner. This didn’t deter Burton and they continued to fight on. Good interplay put Matt Taylor into the D, who squared it to Matt Ball who halved the deficit to 4-3. Barton responded to this with three quickfire goals to put the match to bed. Burton added a fourth consolation goal through Neil Massey from a late short corner.

Men’s 2s vs Barton 2s Match Report

Burton 1s faced Atherstone in their 2nd game of the season. They were glad to have Nick Lathbury returning to the starting lineup, as he added the flair and security that had been missing in recent games. The game started fairly evenly, Burton tried to set traps and win possession in the opponents half, whilst trying to fend off Atherstone attacks down the baseline. Despite good defending, a slight lapse in concentration was capitalised by the away side, and they slipped it through to the back post to go 1-0 up. Half time was positive, and we went out playing as the better side for much of the first part of the second half. But unfortunately Atherstone got a lucky goal through a rebound off an initial save. Burton fought back and had a very strong spell, winning a string of short corners. One of which was flicked in by Nick Lathbury, making it 2-1. As the game went on Burton were fighting hard, Rhys had his weekly strop, and neither side could break through. Atherstone got one more at the end of the match after multiple efforts following a short corner. Final score 3-1. Despite the loss, it was definitely an improvement on the week before. Luke Dunne had the pleasure of finishing a dirty pint after the match consisting of lots of different spirits, to celebrate his 18th Birthday. MOTM - Lathers&nbsp;&nbsp;

Mens 1's V Atherstone Match Report

The first league fixture for the Ladies 2s was on the Ellis vs Stone. With a player dropping out last minute due to illness - we knew we would be up against it from the off with 10 players vs Stone’s bare 11.Both teams started brightly with attacking and defending at both ends. Burton had the run of the field for a while, with our 3 youngsters Abi, Naoise and Lyanna, working hard and getting stuck in. Our back line of Abi, Naoise, Felicity, Katie and I held strong until an attack from a clearance led to Stone’s first goal - which is how it stayed until half time. The half time talk was about us keeping possession, using the press, and meeting the ball (as the opposition weren’t!) to cut out their passes. The second half started - and so did the weather! Harsh rain and the wind against us made for a testing second half! But we pushed on, with chances at goal being created by Sarah Holland, Sophie Warren, Steph and Lyanna. I think there were about 4-5 short corners across the second half that we defended - with two resulting in goals for Stone. The first bouncing over my stick at the right post, and the second between Tilly’s legs. Their fourth came from open play with a scramble in the D, a lifted ball and a nifty aerial deflection resulting in a skillful goal from the opposition. They could have had a fifth but it was disallowed after Katie who saved the initial shot on the goal line was found to have been shoved by the attacker. The weather was horrible, but the game was a great effort with everyone pulling together and working hard. Final score 0-4.Potm was Abi - very well deserved! Thanks to Jenny and Tash for umpiring in the horrible weather! And to Katie Harris for collecting our chips! 

Ladies 2's V Stone Match Report

Burton made the trip to Mansfield to play North Notts with a very ￼young and very old side (aka Dunne, Azhar, Bally &amp; Biggers).Burton started brightly with some good interplay between our youthful and highly skilful midfield with George Bolus, Jack Barrett and Jacob Majka to the fore￼. Slowly however, Mansfield started to dominate the ball and their physically stronger experienced players began to pry open gaps in the Burton defence. Despite retiring for the 10th time the irrepressible Biggers was sharp and made some fine saves. Brody Omre was also having a great game at right back, snuffing out attacks and setting them up for Burton.However, after a string of short corners one of which included a miraculous block on the line by Andy Ball, North Notts eventually broke the deadlock 20 minutes in.They fired in two more in quick succession as Burton were caught on the counter attack and added another just before halftime, it ended 4:0 at the break.A slight change of formation saw Azhar drop back to centre back with David pushing slightly further up the pitch. Burton began to enjoy more possession. Hugo Hill really came into the match in the second half linking well with Tom Watson, Jamie McDonald (who ran his socks off all game) and ￼Jacob. They started to find our lone striker Austin in pockets of space. Austin seemed to be in perpetual motion, always looking to run into space to create options for the midfield. This eventually resulted in Burton starting to probe the Notts goal with both Jacob, Jack and George going close. Notts continued to counter attack at pace and added 2 fortuitous goals, 1 from a deflection and a second from a 3 defender short corner.Final Score 6:0￼While the scoreline suggests otherwise this was a really good performance from a Burton team with 6 players under 15 of which 4 are in their first full year of adult hockey. Stepping from Badgers straight to Div7 is a big ask and our young charges took to it impressively showing skill and grit.MOTM: Jacob

Mens 3's v North Notts 2s Match Report

This weekend I had the privilege of playing for a team who gave everything. Arriving early for our 2:30PB we faced a young and athletic Loughborough squad. It would have been very easy to write off the game before it had started and in many way we gave them too much respect in the first 10-15 mins. It would be hard to blame anyone other than James Fox (me) for some poor passes out of defence that allowed the Loughborough energy to overwhelm the defence and we found ourselves a goals down within 10 minutes. Loughborough then opened up the Burton defence at a short corner, despite Zack Satchwell initial saves the attack reorganised and finally found the back of the net. Loughborough’s final goal came from a turnover of play (polite way of saying a sloppy Burton pass) in their half that they used to their advantage breaking through the the defensive line and slotting home their third.

Burton then changed and actually started believing in themselves and as a whole team played hockey as we know we can. Our first goal came from a short corner routine where Jim Bolus put the ball in to the keepers right. Moments later Any Kemp did what Ant has been doing for years and pounced onto a neat pass from Conor to get Burtons second. Burton were by far the better team in the second half but the equaliser just didnt happen. Yes we lost but thats the third game and the development of our way of playing was great to see.

Huge recognition to Jim Bolus, Ant Kemp and Conor Woodcock whose positivity really helped gel the team in the middle of the pitch. The younger men of this team (Brody, Jamie, Austin and George) put in a massive effort and were truly magnificent many are playing in adult leagues for the first time and in fairness this is a team who are finding their feet with one another. Our team will always respect the efforts of Zack in goals, he continued to pull off save after save and actually looks like he’s beginning to enjoy himself.

If you are willing to work hard and fight for the ball, believe in yourself but more importantly believe in your team mates then you have a fighting chance of delivering. Im looking forward to next week.&nbsp;

Mens 3's V Loughborough Town 4's Match Report

Today’s season opener on The Ellis saw the ladies 1s take on Wolves &amp; Tettenhall, with 14 players and in a new league we were determined to start the season strong,

Wolves certainly came out strong from the off and once Burton had settled in with some new &amp; different players we soon pieced together some good passes and forward play,

Wolves were putting pressure on our defence with some high play, but with a clearance by Kirsten Dolman, out wide to Lexie sending quick paced balls, Elizabeth Snelling drove it to the base line, pulling it back to Rachel Brown on the P Spot , 1-0,

Wolves pulled one back to go into half time 1-1,

Come the 2nd half we knew Wolves would be pushing but there was an equal amount of attacking and defending from both teams, a short corner for Wolves, luckily hit one of their shins on the way in and the goal was dissalowed after their celebrations,

Burton continued to push for the win, with our defence pushing higher up the pitch we were able to apply more pressure on the attack, with Lexie out wide playing the ball into the D, Rachel with 3 attempts at fluffing the shots up before finally making it 2-1,

With 9mins left on the clock our midfield and defence put in a mammoth shift to keep Wolves at bay, fighting off the mounting pressure on the attacks, with saves and sticks all over the final 25, jubilation when the final whistle went and we saw a long awaiting win,

A great effort by the entire team, thanks to Kayleigh Bignell-Duff for being coach and super subber for us and thanks to Louise Bignell for opening a crèche on the sideline,

Burton Hockey Club Gets a New Website

A success full day was had at Shobnall Play Day, the event ran by East Staffs Borough Council and Everyone Active saw multiple activities for children, including Inflatables, Sporting Activities and a Magic Show. The event guest starred scooter world champion Jayden Sharmen, who demonstrated his scootering skills.

As part of the days activities local clubs were invited to bring along a stand to encourage youngsters and even the Mayor's Consort to try something new.&nbsp;

Burton Hockey Club were invited and brought the gazebo, along with some fun activities including dribbling and 'Beat the Keeper' which earned the goal scorer a sticker!

A big thanks to all the team involved for really making the day a success. The club received lots of positive feedback and has gained the interest of some new younger players.&nbsp;

Ian Brown

I brought my son William to BHC when he was ten, after Tony Collier suggested he liked it at School. 

Prior to that I’d not played since I was in my late teens, which sadly was a long time ago! 

I joined in a few times and started playing in the clubs summer friendlies on a Friday evening. 

Bit by bit I became more involved, playing in the 5s and then the 4s. Helping with the age group team at training, helping with the pitch and finally taking on the role as Chair! 

Burton has seen all three of my sons play and enjoy a sport I love. There is a real sense of history and community in the club and I’m glad to be part of that.

I started playing Hockey in 2002, when the Ladies 2's were formed. I have been involved with the club all of my life (I blame my Dad!)- and have fond memories of watching hockey at Shobnall, playing on the park and then going to Henhust Club for a Panda Pop and bag of crisps. I started on the left wing, but now play anywhere across the back line, and have even been known to stand in as keeper! 
I'm also a level 1 Umpire and Coach. I have many highlights but probably a standout is seeing my daughter have a go at hockey on the Ellis for the first time.

I started playing hockey at primary school and joined the club when I was about 11. I mainly play in midfield but will play anywhere if needed. Highlights for me were the return to hockey from COVID, helping Toby run the 4th Team, (which at that time featured Ian Brown and the Kemps)! Captaining the 2nd team in a season where we finished 3rd from top, and a claim to fame was playing the first game in the newly formed Men's 7th Team.

Taking after my dad, at the age of 8 I started playing hockey for Lichfield HC, after playing winger/forward for club, county (Staffs) & region (Midlands) at the ripe of age of 16, injury forced early retirement, skip forward to 2018 and 15 years later welcome to Burton HC, starting in the 4th team and playing for each ladies teams over the seasons and flicking over a number of committee roles, I am currently the oldest in  our ladies 1st team line up …. As well as fixtures Secretary and Communications Secretary.

I currently play as a Keeper, I started playing in goals at primary school, and started at the club whilst in high school joining the academy, and would go on to be keeper for the first Badgers side at the club. I have since fulfilled a number of roles including- Men's 5th team captain, and Fixtures Secretary for both Men and Women for a number of years.

I played my first game for Burton in September 1979 on redgra at Repton. I have been Secretary, Chairman, Captains for the Men’s 3rd to the 6ths and started the Vets Team in 1996. I was playing regularly until 2016 when I started coaching cross country athletics and this clashed with match times. I have though managed to play at least one game most years since then. Playing in the lower teams I played in matches where Rocky, Jon Orme and many others made their club debuts. A chance conversation I had with Wille Welch led to the discussion which set in motion the separation of Burton Hockey Club from the Burton Cricket Club.  So we could embrace playing on Astros and move away from grass pitches and helping to develop club training.

Mr A. J. D. Simey (Convenor and Chairman) was elected 1st Team Captain. Entrance fee was fixed at 2/6 with an annual subscription of 7/6. T. S. Green (Hon. Secretary) was requested to write to the Hockey Association for “particulars” and a copy of the Rules. It was also resolved that notices should be sent to all Ladies and Gentlemen who had played in the previous season informing them that a club had been formed and inviting their membership.

The aim was to establish a first and second eleven. The first fixture list was provided for Gentlemen’s Matches. Ladies’ Matches and Mixed Matches. Both Nottingham and Leicester H.C. were amongst the initial fixtures and this link has been maintained for 75 years.

 19th Century Beginnings

When hockey matches could not be played owing to ground conditions being unfit elsewhere, the Burton ground has the reputation of being extremely well-constructed and most efficiently drained. Credit, initially, goes to Frank Evershed who supervised the construction and, one understands, met the cost. At the same time one must commend the Committees of the Cricket Club and the Hockey Club, together with the later groundsmen, including Harry Fletcher and his son, Jim, for their foresight and ability. The Hockey Club paid rental to the Cricket Club – the amount often becoming a matter of disputation.

Affiliation to the Midland Counties Association was obtained in 1902. This was a much more significant step for the Club than it seemed at the time. It opened the way for any Burton player of that time and in subsequent years to be considered for both County and Divisional honours. As records show, Burton has a proud record in both respects.

Midland County Hockey

The 1914 Committee members were called together again on the 26th June, 1919, and decided to hold a Special General Meeting of the Club on the 7th July. At that meeting the President, F. Evershed, paid tribute to those members who had died as a result of War Service. The names of T. Newton, R Penketh, Herbert Plant and F. W. Wragg were read.

During 1919, the Winshill Hockey Club declined an invitation to amalgamate with the Burton H. C.

Out break of World War I

Even by 1935, however, mechanisation was not yet complete. An item for 12/6 in the accounts – “Repairs to Horse’s Shoes – explains this. But, in that same year first mention of raising a 3rd Xl was made and the possibility of playing Sunday matches was mentioned by the President.

Travel arrangements and Formation of a 3rd Men's Team 

The Club’s Jubilee was celebrated by a dinner held at the Queen’s Hotel on the 11th March 1950. F. A. Lowe (Hon Sec 1903-05, Hon Treasurer 1903-06) presided in the absence of F. Evershed who was ill at the time. R. A. Burrows (Hon Sec D.C.H.A.) proposed the toast to the Club. B.W. Thomas (Capt 1950-52) replied. “The Visitors” was proposed by H. Gibson Lees (Hon Treasurer 1909-20 and Henry Smith (President of Derbyshire C.H.A.) replied. T. Stanley Green (founder member 1899) proposed a toast to the President of the Burton Hockey Club (F. Evershed) and tribute to Frank Evershed and his work and influence was mentioned in all the speeches.

Post World War II

By 1957, at least 6 Burton members were playing in Derbyshire County teams at various levels, and Alan Wright organised arrangements for the visit of the “Brewsters” to Lowestoft. New members included N. Wilford, A. P. Turner, N King. H. H. Cherry kindly provided new goal posts for the Club.

 Social Events

Throughout the year we have the club organises social events, including comedy nights, club days, tour teams culminating in the end of season dinner. Teams also organise their own social events including days and nights out.

For 2025 we have a new rigorous training schedule, this consists of Women's, Men's, Goalie and Academy Training. Take a Look at the calendar below, choose a suitable session and come on down  to the Ellis pitch at Shobnall.

Burton Hockey Club (EH id: 1180) has also been recognised as working towards providing a Safe, Effective and Child Friendly club environment, and as such has been awarded the England Hockey ClubsFirst Accreditation.

Ladies 1 (5-0) Lichfield 4
